Half-Time/Full-Time Betting: How HT/FT Works and How to Read It

Half-time/full-time looks simple. Pick the result at the break and the result at the end. Get both right and you win.

That is exactly why the odds are tempting. Two predictions in one bet pay more than one. But they also fail more often. This guide shows how the market works, what to look at before you pick, and how to tell whether a price is worth taking.

How HT/FT betting works

You choose one of nine combinations. The first sign is the half-time result. The second is the final result. Extra time is not counted, and the same goes for the first half: only the 45 minutes plus stoppage time matter.

PickWhat it means
1/1Home team leads at half-time and wins
1/XHome team leads at half-time, match ends level
1/2Home team leads at half-time, away team wins
X/1Level at half-time, home team wins
X/XLevel at half-time and at full time
X/2Level at half-time, away team wins
2/1Away team leads at half-time, home team wins
2/XAway team leads at half-time, match ends level
2/2Away team leads at half-time and wins

Some bookmakers also offer a separate half-time draw market. You bet only that the first half ends level. It is a simpler cousin of HT/FT.

Why the odds are higher, and why that is a trap

With nine outcomes, each one gets a bigger price than a plain 1X2 pick. A favourite that pays 1.50 to win may pay far more as 1/1.

Big odds are not free value. Markets with many outcomes usually carry a larger bookmaker margin. A single goal just before the break can also turn a winning bet into a losing one. If you want to see how margin hides inside a price, read how bookmakers calculate odds.

A simple routine for every match

  1. Read the match first. Who is the favourite, and how do they usually start? The match analysis guide shows a full checklist.
  2. Pick the most likely story. Fast start? Slow start? A comeback? Choose one or two combinations that fit it.
  3. Estimate a probability. Be honest. A rough range is fine.
  4. Turn it into fair odds. Divide 1 by your probability.
  5. Compare with the price. Take the bet only if the bookmaker pays more than your fair odds.

Here is a hypothetical example. You think a strong home team leads at the break and wins in 42% of such matches. Your fair odds are 1 / 0.42 = 2.38.

Bookmaker price for 1/1Implied probabilityVerdict
2.601 / 2.60 = 38.5%Price is above your fair odds. Possible value
2.201 / 2.20 = 45.5%Price is below your fair odds. No bet

The hard part is the 42%. It is an estimate, and estimates can be wrong. That is why stakes should stay small.

Prices like these come with a lower hit rate. That is the trade-off. You will lose more often, and the wins have to pay for it. Our Master subscription is built around exactly this style: 2+ daily picks with odds from 2.50, for players who accept more risk in return for a bigger payout. Picks of this kind, HT/FT included, sometimes land there.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the biggest odds. A high price usually means a low chance.
  • Forgetting extra time. It does not count. Only 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
  • Using full-match form only. HT/FT is about how a team starts and how it finishes.
  • Covering many combinations. The more you cover, the more margin you pay.

Keep stakes small

HT/FT is a high-variance market. Use a flat stake and a small share of your bank. Our bankroll management guide explains how to set it.
