Eighteen clubs, 34 rounds

The Eredivisie has eighteen clubs. Each one plays the other seventeen twice, at home and away, which gives 34 matches per club and 306 in a season. The two clubs at the bottom go down automatically to the Eerste Divisie, and the club in 16th place enters a promotion and relegation play-off against clubs from the second tier. The winner takes the last top-flight place for the following season. The play-off format has changed several times over the years, so the league’s own site is the place to check how it works in the current season.

Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord are the clubs most readers think of first, and their matches draw most of the attention. A Dutch round also contains plenty of games between smaller sides, and those are usually the ones where the bookmaker has less public interest to lean on when setting a price.
